The Ortigas Center is known to be a bustling central business district in the heart of Metro Manila. Home to many of the country's leading business establishments, it is also the site of large shopping malls and well-known restaurants. The Ortigas Center also consists of large roads that are great for moving vehicles through an area. However, if you are a pedestrian, getting across a wide, busy, high speed road can be daunting. With over thousands of people visiting Ortigas to go to their workplaces and residential condominiums, the use of the pedestrian overpasses will be very helpful for the public. It is for this reason that three (3) new pedestrian overpasses were installed in areas with many people to help maintain the safety of the pedestrians and provide convenience to the public when crossing to the other side. Two of the new pedestrian overpasses are located along Onyx Road corner Ortigas Avenue and Ortigas Avenue corner F. Ortigas Jr. Road where several companies are located. The busiest overpass among the three is the one located near Robinsons Galleria, the flagship mall of Robinsons Land Corporation. Robinsons Galleria is located near two high-rise office towers – the Galleria Corporate Center and the Robinsons-Equitable Tower. Three deluxe hotels are also near it such as the Holiday Inn Galleria Manila and Crowne Galleria Manila, and the Galleria Regency. With the new pedestrian overpass, employees and guests can easily and safely reach the other side without the need to cross the road at the risk of being knocked down by speeding vehicles. Professionals, especially those who own cars, who work in nearby office buildings across the mall can also benefit from using the pedestrian overpass. With hundreds of cars roaming the streets of Ortigas, parking spaces can be easily filled up. But with the new pedestrian overpass, car owners can easily park in the mall for a fee and use the overpass to conveniently get to their offices. Apart from easily connecting the public to their workplaces, the pedestrian overpasses also have distinctive characteristics which add to the convenience of everyone. For one, each pedestrian overpasses have landscaped plants. Aside from the aesthetic value it brings, the plants can filter pollutants and dust from the air. They can also lower the temperature from the outside giving the public a much cooler and breezier feeling. The pedestrian overpasses can also serve as a shield from the harsh rays of the sun and coldness of the rain. Since the weather is changing very quickly, the people who cross the pedestrian overpass to get to the other side will no longer have to worry whenever they forget their umbrella. The pedestrian overpasses also have bicycle wheel ramps so that cyclists can easily wheel their bicycles as they walk up the overpass and avoid the hassle of carrying them up the stairs. The newly-installed pedestrian overpasses were inaugurated last September 8 with Hon. Robert Eusebio, Mayor of Pasig City, gracing the event together with the members of the Ortigas Center Association Inc. (OCAI) headed by Mr. Tommy O, OCAI President.
