Sheila Francisco’s Balancing Act as Mother, Wife and a Leader in Finance

Did you have an experience where you had to choose between being a mom and work as a VP? If yes, how did you handle it and what have you learned from the experience? 

I am grateful to have had understanding superiors who have never placed me in a position where I had to choose between my role as a mother and my professional commitments. Fortunately, occasions, such as important school events during weekdays, have rarely coincided with crucial office meetings and any missed conferences have been met with understanding and support from my boss and my team. 

Effective time management and prioritization have been key in balancing my responsibilities at work and with my family. I am thankful for the unwavering support of my family members, who step in to assist with childcare when work demands require my attention. Similarly, I deeply appreciate the understanding of my colleagues when I need to take leave for family-related commitments.

Throughout your career, who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?

Throughout my career, I’ve consistently looked to my managers and department heads for inspiration and mentorship. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from exceptional leaders whose intelligence and strategic thinking have not only influenced my professional growth but also left a profound impact on my personal development. Witnessing their adept handling of both work challenges and lifestyle choices has served as a constant source of inspiration for me. Additionally, I draw inspiration from my teammates who exhibit remarkable leadership qualities in managing their divisions and achieving significant milestones for our team.

You've accomplished so much in your career to date, do you feel there's more to achieve?

Without a doubt, there is still much to achieve on my professional journey. I am committed to continually setting new goals, pursuing advancements, and contributing meaningfully to the success of my team. I firmly believe that the pursuit of knowledge, personal growth, and the opportunity to positively influence others serve as driving forces in my ongoing pursuit of achievement and fulfillment in my career.

If you could go back in time, what would you have done differently in your career and in your personal life?  

I would focus on two things. First, I would build an even stronger support network and seek out more mentors to guide me along. I have a fantastic boss and I had several great bosses before him who helped me a lot to lead my team effectively. But having someone outside my immediate work circle to bounce ideas off would be very beneficial. External perspective brings fresh insights and learnings. My team may have the same perspectives and experiences since we have the same background. Someone from the outside can offer a different vantage point on how to view challenges and opportunities. For me that would really be a big help. The second one is that I would really like my younger self to welcome challenges with open arms and see it as a chance to grow and learn. Difficult circumstances compel individuals to reassess their strategies and so I believe that delving deep into those lessons from tough situations I can further gain valuable insights for my strengths, weaknesses and areas to improve.

If you were to give advice to a young woman starting in her career, what would it be?   

For all the fabulous young women out there starting out with your careers, go for your dreams with all your heart. But never forget the values that make you who you are. Build up a strong support network, both professionally and personally. And remember that success isn't just about the goals that you achieve, it's also about how you feel about yourself along the way. Remember, it's also about nurturing your passions, investing in relationships and always being open to learning from even the tiniest challenges that come your way. Approach it with a positive outlook.
