Ann Yap's Feminine Touch in Hospitality Innovation

Discover how Ann pioneers groundbreaking initiatives, pushing the boundaries of what's possible, and sets new industry standards in redefining guest experiences. This feature shines a spotlight on her strength as a woman leader, emphasizing her unique feminine perspective that brings innovation, elegance, and excellence to the forefront of the hospitality sector.

What groundbreaking initiatives have you pioneered in your career?

I rose from the ranks overseas.  At that time and in that part of the world, being a woman and a Filipino did not carry much weight.  Some days were harder than others, but I had to get up, dress up and show up. Thankfully, a lot of things have changed since then, a paradigm shift has made the world much more inclusive and accepting. I still keep the curveballs and the learnings close to my heart like a badge. It may not have been groundbreaking but definitely a very special experience.

How does having a feminine perspective and leadership contribute to achieving excellence and innovation in the hospitality industry?

The guest is at the center of everything we do.  However, we cannot give them a memorable stay if the associates servicing their requirements are not genuinely happy.  I think it is very important that empathy is not just extended to guests but more so to our associates.  Half the battle is already won just by listening. A real interest in what the other party is conveying.  I guess that’s the special gift that we bring to the table – empathy, building mutual trust – ensuring that both our guests and our associates have smiles that reach their eyes.

You've accomplished so much in your career to date, do you feel there's more to achieve?

I have always regarded achievements, much like beauty, as really being very subjected.  I am extremely pleased with where the journey has taken me, peaks and valleys, and the beautiful people I have met along the way.  If I can pay forward and have even a minute contribution in shaping the future of our next generation leaders at RHR, I think that will be the ultimate success.

If you could go back in time, what would you have done differently in your career and in your personal life?

Not a thing. Every single moment has led me to this imperfectly delightful life.  I have a wonderful family and crazy friends who make the ride both interesting and exciting.

If you were to give advice to a young woman starting in her career, what would it be?

It may sound cliché, but it definitely worked for me. Find a job you love, one that you are passionate about, give it your all and you will never have to work a day in your life.
